HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 142
Celebrating the life of Nathan T. Hardee.

WHEREAS, Nathan T. Hardee of Chesapeake, a respected citizen and the outstanding principal of Deep Creek High School for 38 years, died on August 9, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Nathan "Nat" Hardee was born in Warrenton, North Carolina, the son of the late Nathan B. and Nancy W. Hardee; he graduated from Deep Creek High School in 1958 and was an exceptional athlete, lettering in many sports; and

WHEREAS, Nathan Hardee received an associate's degree from Frederick College, a bachelor's degree from East Carolina University, and a master's degree from the University of Virginia; he completed postgraduate studies at Old Dominion University; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and hard-working educator, Nathan Hardee began his career as a science teacher and coach at his alma mater, Deep Creek High School, and served the Chesapeake Public Schools for 47 years as a teacher, coach, and administrator; and

WHEREAS, Nathan Hardee began administrative duties in 1970 as an assistant principal first at Crestwood High School and then at Western Branch High School, and he moved to Deep Creek High School as principal in February 1972; and

WHEREAS, a leader in the educational community and a mentor to his peers, Nathan Hardee gave his time and expertise to numerous professional organizations, including the Virginia High School League executive board, the Virginia and National Association of Secondary School Administrators, and the Chesapeake Association of Public School Administrators; and

WHEREAS, devoted to improving the quality of life of fellow citizens, especially young people, Nathan Hardee was a lifetime member and former president of the Parent-Teacher-Student Association; a past president and member of the Deep Creek Ruritan Club; and member of the Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge, Chesapeake Sheriff's Auxiliary, and the Big Entry Hunt Club; and

WHEREAS, in 2000 the Deep Creek High School football facility, the Nathan T. Hardee Stadium, was dedicated in his honor; and

WHEREAS, Nathan Hardee received the W. Randolph Nichols Scholarship Foundation Award for his years of commitment to public education, and was recognized as Chesapeake Public Schools Boss of the Year twice during his career, and as Citizen of the Year by the Deep Creek Lions Club, and as Ruritan of the Year by the Deep Creek Ruritan Club; and

WHEREAS, Nathan Hardee was a faithful member of Deep Creek Baptist Church and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Nathan Hardee will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by  his loving wife, Barbara Hardee; his daughter, Tammy Rodriguez, and husband Steve; his granddaughter, two sisters, many other family members, and close friends; and his beloved Deep Creek High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Nathan T. Hardee; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Nathan T. Hardee as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
