WHEREAS, the Collegiate School girls' tennis team won the League of Independent School (LIS) season-ending tournament and capped off their season by winning the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state championship final at the Collegiate School on November 15, 2009; and WHEREAS, the Collegiate School Cougars have now won 16 LIS Championships beginning in 1987 and have won six of eight VISAA state finals; and WHEREAS, in the state tournament, the Collegiate School girls' tennis team defeated Episcopal High School, St. Stephens & St. Agnes, and finally, St. Catherine's 5 - 4, coming from behind in the deciding match at #3 doubles, down two match points, 15 - 40, 7 - 9, to finally win 11 - 9; and WHEREAS, the Cougars competed in 178 individual matches, winning 140, losing only two team matches, each by a single tie-breaker; and WHEREAS, senior Tori Bos earned All LIS Honors at #1 singles, along with LIS Champions freshman Connor Brewer at #2 singles and doubles, junior Erin Anderson at #2 doubles, junior Hannah Carl at #5 singles and #3 doubles, and freshman Sarah "Frankie" O'Neill at #3 doubles; and WHEREAS, Connor Brewer, Erin Anderson, and tri-captain and senior Anne Paige "AP" Lansinger were also named to the All-State Team; and WHEREAS, other members of the 2009 Collegiate School girls' tennis team were seniors and tri-captains Parke Whitley and Bridgette Williams and senior Mollie Bisger; juniors Meredith Armstrong, Amanda Johnson, Katie Maraghy, and Virginia Parks; and sophomore Emily Wright; and WHEREAS, the championship performance of the 2009 Cougars is a tribute to the talent, commitment, and team effort of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Karin Whitt and assistant coaches Sharon Johnson and Wes Atiyeh; the support of the parents, students, and faculty; and co-athletic directors Karen Doxey and Charlie McFall and associate athletic directors Will O'Brien and Andrew Stanley; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Collegiate School girls' tennis team on winning the 2009 LIS and VISAA championships; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Karin Whitt as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the outstanding performance of the 2009 Collegiate School girls' tennis team. |
