Summary
Strategies to Address Antimicrobial Resistance Act - Amends the Public Health Service Act to require the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish the Antimicrobial Resistance Office. Requires the Secretary to establish the Public Health Antimicrobial Advisory Board to advise the Director of the Office (Director). Requires the Director to update the Public Health Action Plan to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance within 18 months. Requires the Secretary, acting through the Director, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to: (1) develop an antimicrobial resistance strategic research plan; and (2) establish at least ten Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance and Research Network sites. Amends the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to direct the Secretary to require each sponsor of an approved human antimicrobial drug product sold or distributed in the United States to submit antimicrobial drug sales and distribution data. Requires that an application for a new animal drug contain information to ensure that reported data is comparable and reliable. Requires (currently, permits) the Secretary to share information reported in a new animal drug application with the Antimicrobial Resistance Task Force. Sets forth provisions for the Secretary to secure reliable and comparable animal and human antimicrobial drug consumption data. Requires the Under Secretary for Health of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the Director to work together to identify and report upon interventions that prevent and control the development of antimicrobial resistance.
