Manuel Ortiz, Jr. | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Manuel Ortiz, | ||
Jr., who died April 27, 2011, at the age of 87; and | ||
WHEREAS, Manuel Ortiz was a lifelong resident of San | ||
Antonio; he served the nation as a staff sergeant in the United | ||
States Army Air Forces during World War II in the | ||
China-Burma-India theater; and | ||
WHEREAS, Following his military service, Mr. Ortiz served | ||
in the San Antonio Police Department for 28 years, many of them as | ||
a narcotics detective, where he played an important role in the | ||
fight against drug trafficking and organized crime; working in | ||
cooperation with federal agencies, he was responsible for one of | ||
the largest drug busts in Bexar County; and | ||
WHEREAS, Following his retirement from the police | ||
department, he continued his service to the community as chief | ||
investigator for District Attorney Fred Rodriguez and as head of | ||
security for Joske's Department Stores; his entrepreneurial | ||
spirit found expression in the small business he owned; and | ||
WHEREAS, A devout Catholic who practiced his faith in his | ||
daily life, Mr. Ortiz was an active parishioner at Blessed | ||
Sacrament Catholic Church; he was a longtime benefactor of the | ||
Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in | ||
Washington, D.C.; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Ortiz was active in community affairs, | ||
serving on the board of the Bexar Appraisal District; he was a | ||
life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9186 and | ||
longtime member of the Alfazar Shrine, the Scottish Rite, and the | ||
Grand Lodge of Texas; and | ||
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and generosity, he was | ||
a guide and mentor to many people, and his commitment to the | ||
principle of education and the value of hard work will not be | ||
forgotten by those who knew him; and | ||
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and | ||
grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured | ||
forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd | ||
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
family of Manuel Ortiz, Jr.: his wife of 62 years, Irene Ortiz; | ||
his daughter, Stella Ortiz Kyle; his son and daughter-in-law, | ||
Manuel and Sheri Ortiz; his sister, Emma Villarreal; his | ||
grandchildren, Christopher and Joshua Kyle and Scott and Patrice | ||
Ortiz; and his great-grandchildren, Jax, Maleah, and Austen | ||
Ortiz; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of Manuel Ortiz, Jr. | ||
