SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 930
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Zapata County Independent School District on the
60th anniversary of its accreditation; and
WHEREAS, Until 60 years ago, the children of Zapata County
had few opportunities for higher education; high school students
who endeavored to attend universities were forced to leave their
hometown during the school year to live with extended family
members in accredited districts or to attend boarding schools; and
WHEREAS, In 1954, the district held a community meeting,
and residents voiced their desire for a fully accredited
district; school officials prioritized public concerns, and
after a three-year phase-in guided by the Texas Education Agency,
the Zapata County Independent School District became fully
accredited for the 1956-1957 school year; and
WHEREAS, The accreditation of the district broke boundaries
and expanded educational opportunities that were previously limited
to a privileged few; in the decades that have followed, the district
has promoted an inclusive culture, improved curricula, and created
programs that have helped innumerable students to build strong
  foundations for the future; and
WHEREAS, On May 12, 2017, members of the community gathered
at Zapata High School to honor alumni and those who helped shape a
more bright and prosperous future for the young residents of
  Zapata County by making the district's accreditation possible;
  now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
Legislature, hereby commend the teachers, staff, and administrators
of the Zapata County Independent School District on their exemplary
service to the young people of Zapata County and extend to all best
wishes for continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the district as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
