WHEREAS, Mark Twain Dual Language Academy in the San Antonio | ||
Independent School District is celebrating its 100th anniversary in | ||
2023; and | ||
WHEREAS, San Antonio citizens voted in 1922 to establish a | ||
pioneering junior high school system for students in grades six | ||
through eight; the resulting eight campuses, which were named after | ||
notable figures of American literature, opened in 1923 and offered | ||
a bridge between elementary and high school and a more challenging | ||
curriculum to better prepare students to succeed; and | ||
WHEREAS, Ably guided by principal David Garcia and assistant | ||
principals Elena Aldaz and Gisella Calejo, Mark Twain Dual Language | ||
Academy currently serves students in prekindergarten through the | ||
eighth grade; the school opened as a dual language institution | ||
during the 2017-2018 school year, and its unique curriculum allows | ||
students to receive academic instruction in both Spanish and | ||
English; the academy also offers extracurricular programs such as | ||
mariachi and sports, and it has been recognized with an A rating; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, For the past century, this noteworthy institution | ||
has provided its students with a strong educational foundation on | ||
which to build, and it has made a positive and lasting difference in | ||
the lives of generations of San Antonio residents; now, therefore, | ||
be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature, 3rd | ||
Called Session, hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mark | ||
Twain Dual Language Academy and extend to its students, faculty, | ||
staff, and alumni sincere best wishes for continued success; and, | ||
be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
Senate. |
