Marjory Kent Vickery | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
citizens of Lewisville in mourning the loss of Marjory Kent | ||
Vickery, who died on May 4, 2017, at the age of 90; and | ||
WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was born on July 13, 1926; she | ||
shaped a life of purpose as a champion of education, and she | ||
enriched the lives of others by her warmth, her humor, and her | ||
enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; and | ||
WHEREAS, Marjory graduated from Southern Methodist | ||
University and became a world traveler and a trailblazing citizen | ||
of the Lewisville community; she was the first woman to be | ||
elected to serve on the board of the Lewisville Independent | ||
School District; she was later the first Republican woman to be | ||
elected to the Texas State Board of Education, and with that | ||
victory, she also became the first Republican in Denton County to | ||
be elected to state office; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery is noted for playing a key role in | ||
developing vital student safety measures, such as implementing | ||
speed limits in school zones and assigning crossing guards at | ||
designated sidewalks; she also worked with the Lewisville | ||
Independent School District Education Foundation to increase | ||
funding for students and teachers; in 2003, Vickery Elementary | ||
School opened its doors in honor of her many years of exceptional | ||
work on behalf of the school district; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery shared 63 years of marriage with the | ||
late Paul Byron Vickery, and their loving relationship and | ||
happiness served as an example for their five children, their six | ||
grandchildren, and their six great-grandchildren; and | ||
WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was a treasured Texan who was | ||
respected and admired for her tireless work on behalf of young | ||
citizens; she was recognized on numerous occasions for her many | ||
contributions to her community, and she leaves behind memories | ||
that will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in | ||
her life; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th | ||
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
family of Marjory Kent Vickery; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her | ||
family as an expression of deepest sympathy fromtheTexasSenate | ||
and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of | ||
Marjory Vickery. | ||
