| Marjory Kent Vickery | ||
| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
| citizens of Lewisville in mourning the loss of Marjory Kent | ||
| Vickery, who died on May 4, 2017, at the age of 90; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was born on July 13, 1926; she | ||
| shaped a life of purpose as a champion of education, and she | ||
| enriched the lives of others by her warmth, her humor, and her | ||
| enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Marjory graduated from Southern Methodist | ||
| University and became a world traveler and a trailblazing citizen | ||
| of the Lewisville community; she was the first woman to be | ||
| elected to serve on the board of the Lewisville Independent | ||
| School District; she was later the first Republican woman to be | ||
| elected to the Texas State Board of Education, and with that | ||
| victory, she also became the first Republican in Denton County to | ||
| be elected to state office; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery is noted for playing a key role in | ||
| developing vital student safety measures, such as implementing | ||
| speed limits in school zones and assigning crossing guards at | ||
| designated sidewalks; she also worked with the Lewisville | ||
| Independent School District Education Foundation to increase | ||
| funding for students and teachers; in 2003, Vickery Elementary | ||
| School opened its doors in honor of her many years of exceptional | ||
| work on behalf of the school district; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery shared 63 years of marriage with the | ||
| late Paul Byron Vickery, and their loving relationship and | ||
| happiness served as an example for their five children, their six | ||
| grandchildren, and their six great-grandchildren; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was a treasured Texan who was | ||
| respected and admired for her tireless work on behalf of young | ||
| citizens; she was recognized on numerous occasions for her many | ||
| contributions to her community, and she leaves behind memories | ||
| that will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in | ||
| her life; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th | ||
| Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
| family of Marjory Kent Vickery; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her | ||
| family as an expression of deepest sympathy fromtheTexasSenate | ||
| and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of | ||
| Marjory Vickery. | ||
