Janis Guerrero-Thompson | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Janis | ||
Guerrero-Thompson, who died June 7, 2011, at the age of 58; and | ||
WHEREAS, Janis Guerrero-Thompson was a native Austinite | ||
who graduated from Crockett High School and earned bachelor's, | ||
master's, and doctoral degrees from The University of Texas at | ||
Austin; she enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an | ||
educator, administrator, and community volunteer, and her energy | ||
and passion had a profound impact on many lives; and | ||
WHEREAS, She served the Austin Independent School District | ||
in several capacities through the years, most recently as | ||
director for planning and community relations, where she oversaw | ||
communications, planning, fund-raising, and community | ||
partnerships; her innovative ideas on how to communicate with | ||
diverse communities and develop the district's plans for the | ||
future exemplified her leadership on important issues and her | ||
commitment to furthering the best interests of the district's | ||
schoolchildren; and | ||
WHEREAS, Among the many community organizations that | ||
benefited from her talent and expertise were Central Texas | ||
Goodwill Industries and the Girls Empowerment Network of Austin; | ||
she served on the City of Austin's Civil Service Commission and | ||
was an active volunteer with Chaplain Services at University | ||
Medical Center Brackenridge; and | ||
WHEREAS, She was honored in 2004 by Hispanic magazine as a | ||
Top Latina in Community Service, and in 2008 was named one of the | ||
25 Most Influential Hispanics in Austin by La Voz de Austin, | ||
Austin Community College, and the Texas Association of Chicanos | ||
in Higher Education; and | ||
WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and generosity, she | ||
gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom, her commitment to | ||
education, and her sensitivity toward others will not be | ||
forgotten by those who were privileged to share in her life; and | ||
WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, | ||
and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by | ||
her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere | ||
condolences to the bereaved family of Janis Guerrero-Thompson: | ||
her husband, Chuck Thompson; her son and daughter-in-law, | ||
Matthew and Jessica Thompson; and her three grandchildren; and, | ||
be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of Janis Guerrero-Thompson. | ||
