relating to Texas Military Heroes Day in public schools. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is | ||
amended by adding Section 29.9071 to read as follows: | ||
Sec. 29.9071. TEXAS MILITARY HEROES DAY. (a) To educate | ||
students about the sacrifices made by brave Texans who have served | ||
in the armed forces of the United States, the governor shall | ||
designate a day to be known as Texas Military Heroes Day in public | ||
schools. | ||
(b) Texas Military Heroes Day shall include appropriate | ||
instruction, as determined by each school district. Instruction | ||
may include: | ||
(1) information about persons who have served in the | ||
armed forces of the United States and are from the community or the | ||
geographic area in which the district is located; and | ||
(2) participation, in person or using technology, in | ||
age-appropriate learning projects at battlefields and gravesites | ||
associated with a person who has served in the armed forces. | ||
(c) The agency may collaborate with other state agencies to | ||
promote Texas Military Heroes Day. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 | ||
school year. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
