| relating to Texas Military Heroes Day in public schools. | ||
| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is | ||
| amended by adding Section 29.9071 to read as follows: | ||
| Sec. 29.9071. TEXAS MILITARY HEROES DAY. (a) To educate | ||
| students about the sacrifices made by brave Texans who have served | ||
| in the armed forces of the United States, the governor shall | ||
| designate a day to be known as Texas Military Heroes Day in public | ||
| schools. | ||
| (b) Texas Military Heroes Day shall include appropriate | ||
| instruction, as determined by each school district. Instruction | ||
| may include: | ||
| (1) information about persons who have served in the | ||
| armed forces of the United States and are from the community or the | ||
| geographic area in which the district is located; and | ||
| (2) participation, in person or using technology, in | ||
| age-appropriate learning projects at battlefields and gravesites | ||
| associated with a person who has served in the armed forces. | ||
| (c) The agency may collaborate with other state agencies to | ||
| promote Texas Military Heroes Day. | ||
| SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 | ||
| school year. | ||
| SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
| a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
| provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
| Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
| Act takes effect September 1, 2017. | ||
