WHEREAS, A life lived with purpose and zest drew to a close | ||
with the passing of Dr. Karl B. Putnam of El Paso on July 12, 2017, | ||
at the age of 69; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born in Durham, North Carolina, on December 19, | ||
1947, Karl Putnam grew up in Victoria and Orange; after earning his | ||
bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting from The University | ||
of Texas at Austin, he began his academic career in 1974 as a | ||
lecturer at California Polytechnic State University; he went on to | ||
do doctoral work in accounting at Oklahoma State University, and in | ||
1979, shortly before receiving his Ph.D., he joined the faculty at | ||
Texas A&M University as an assistant professor; and | ||
WHEREAS, In 1986, Dr. Putnam accepted a position as an | ||
associate professor in the Department of Accounting and Information | ||
Systems at The University of Texas at El Paso, where he taught | ||
courses in financial, managerial, and governmental/not-for-profit | ||
accounting to both undergraduate and graduate students; committed | ||
to advancing his field, he was the author or coauthor of more than | ||
50 articles published in scholarly and professional journals and | ||
held membership in the American Accounting Association and the | ||
Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants; and | ||
WHEREAS, Deeply concerned for the environment, Dr. Putnam | ||
vigorously supported clean air and anti-pollution initiatives; he | ||
also shared his passion for the natural world by leading treks with | ||
the El Paso Hiking Group, and he delighted in introducing | ||
first-time hikers to the splendors of the Franklin Mountains; his | ||
extended family held a central place in his life, and he doted on | ||
his numerous nieces and nephews; numbered among his eclectic range | ||
of enthusiasms were drones, blueberries, and intense games of | ||
Scrabble; and | ||
WHEREAS, A fiercely independent thinker with a strong moral | ||
compass, Karl Putnam dedicated himself to making the world a better | ||
place, and he will forever be remembered with warm affection by all | ||
who had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of | ||
Dr. Karl B. Putnam and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of | ||
his family: to his partner of 20 years, Noel Rosenbaum; to his | ||
sisters, Peggy and Kay; to his brothers, Martin and Robert; and to | ||
his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Karl | ||
Putnam. | ||
