WHEREAS, United States Marine Corps Sergeant Jacob De la | ||
Garza of Edinburg was gravely wounded in the line of duty on May 21, | ||
2011, while serving his country in Afghanistan; and | ||
WHEREAS, Deployed to Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion, 5th | ||
Marine Division, Sergeant De la Garza was injured while on patrol | ||
when a roadside bomb exploded in Sangin, a small town northwest of | ||
Kandahar; he was flown to Germany and then to the Naval Medical | ||
Center in San Diego for treatment; and | ||
WHEREAS, Jacob De la Garza graduated from Edinburg High | ||
School in 2000 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California; | ||
before his deployment to Afghanistan, this brave young Texan | ||
completed three tours of duty in Iraq; as recounted in the book We | ||
Were One: Shoulder to Shoulder with the Marines Who Took Fallujah, | ||
Sergeant De la Garza saved the lives of several fellow Marines when | ||
they were attacked by the enemy; and | ||
WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Sergeant De la Garza is | ||
supported by the love of a devoted family that includes his wife, | ||
Priscilla, his two children, Jayden and Brealynn, his mother, Anita | ||
de Leon, his father, Robert De la Garza, and his brothers, Javier | ||
and Julian De la Garza; and | ||
WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt of gratitude to our | ||
country's military personnel, for they are called on to bear great, | ||
often unimaginable burdens, and they render service and sacrifice | ||
that is truly beyond measure; Sergeant De la Garza embodies the | ||
highest ideals of the United States armed forces, and his courage | ||
under fire and his unwavering commitment to his mission and to his | ||
comrades-in-arms make him truly deserving of commendation; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Sergeant Jacob De la | ||
Garza for his valorous service in Iraq and Afghanistan and extend to | ||
him heartfelt best wishes for the future; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Sergeant De la Garza as an expression of high regard by | ||
the Texas House of Representatives. | ||
