WHEREAS, Citizens and business leaders of Brazoria County are | ||
gathering in Austin on February 28, 2023, for the 50th anniversary | ||
of Brazoria County Day at the State Capitol, and this celebration | ||
offers a fitting opportunity to recognize the event's founder, the | ||
late Wayne A. Shaw; and | ||
WHEREAS, Looking for a way to advocate for the needs and | ||
concerns of county residents, Mr. Shaw went to the Brazosport Area | ||
Chamber of Commerce with the idea for Brazoria County Day; he | ||
subsequently spearheaded efforts to create the event and gave the | ||
day its distinctive flair, deciding to serve fresh shrimp to | ||
distinguish it from other county days and nicknaming it "the | ||
World's Largest Shrimp Cocktail"; and | ||
WHEREAS, The first Brazoria County Day, held in 1973, only | ||
drew a handful of the county's residents, but over the past half | ||
century, it has evolved into one of the most popular events of the | ||
legislative season, attracting hundreds of participants; since its | ||
founding, the day has been celebrated each year that the | ||
legislature has been in session, with the exception of 2021 due to | ||
the COVID-19 pandemic; this year's observance will be the first | ||
since Mr. Shaw passed away in January 2020, and the event's | ||
trademark shrimp is being served out of a boat christened the | ||
SS Wayne Shaw in his honor; and | ||
WHEREAS, Through his efforts to create Brazoria County Day, | ||
Wayne Shaw set an inspiring example of community leadership and | ||
civic engagement, and it is a pleasure to join in recognizing his | ||
significant contributions to Brazoria County; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas | ||
hereby honor the memory of Wayne A. Shaw on the occasion of the 50th | ||
anniversary of Brazoria County Day at the State Capitol and pay | ||
tribute to his life and achievements; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
House of Representatives and Senate. |
