A RESOLUTION

Commemorating the National Urban League on their 100th

anniversary.

WHEREAS, The National Urban League has worked on behalf of

4

African Americans to end racial discrimination in the United

5

States; and

6

WHEREAS, The National Urban League was founded in 1920 by

7

Ruth Standish Baldwin and George Edmund Haynes; and

8

WHEREAS, The mission of the Urban League movement is "to

9

enable African Americans to secure economic self-reliance,

10

parity, power and civil rights"; and

11

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to four National Urban League

12

affiliates: the Shenango Valley Urban League, the Urban League

13

of Greater Pittsburgh, the Urban League of Lancaster County and

14

the Urban League of Philadelphia; and

15

WHEREAS, The National Urban League has made tremendous

16

progress from the Great Migration of the early 20th century,

17

through the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s to the election

of the first African-American President; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate commemorate the National Urban

3

League on their 100th anniversary.
