| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Commemorating the National Urban League on their 100th |
2 | anniversary. |
3 | WHEREAS, The National Urban League has worked on behalf of |
4 | African Americans to end racial discrimination in the United |
5 | States; and |
6 | WHEREAS, The National Urban League was founded in 1920 by |
7 | Ruth Standish Baldwin and George Edmund Haynes; and |
8 | WHEREAS, The mission of the Urban League movement is "to |
9 | enable African Americans to secure economic self-reliance, |
10 | parity, power and civil rights"; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to four National Urban League |
12 | affiliates: the Shenango Valley Urban League, the Urban League |
13 | of Greater Pittsburgh, the Urban League of Lancaster County and |
14 | the Urban League of Philadelphia; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The National Urban League has made tremendous |
16 | progress from the Great Migration of the early 20th century, |
17 | through the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s to the election |

1 | of the first African-American President; therefore be it |
2 | RESOLVED, That the Senate commemorate the National Urban |
3 | League on their 100th anniversary. |
