| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating the month of April 2010 as "Sexual Assault Awareness |
2 | Month" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, One in five college women in the United States will |
4 | be a victim of sexual assault by the time she graduates; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Three women are murdered by an intimate partner |
6 | every day and 4.8 million women are physically assaulted every |
7 | year in the United States; and |
8 | WHEREAS, One in four girls and one in six boys in the United |
9 | States will be sexually assaulted by the age of 18; and |
10 | WHEREAS, In 2008, there were 3,440 forcible rape offenses |
11 | reported to police departments in this Commonwealth; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Sexual assault affects women, children and men of |
13 | all racial, cultural and economic backgrounds; and |
14 | WHEREAS, In addition to the immediate physical and emotional |
15 | effects of sexual assault, sexual assault may also lead to post- |
16 | traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, depression, |

1 | homelessness, eating disorders and suicide; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Sexual assault can be devastating not only for the |
3 | survivor but also for the family and friends of the survivor; |
4 | and |
5 | WHEREAS, Attaining the goal of preventing and ending sexual |
6 | violence begins by raising public awareness of the prevalence |
7 | and effects of sexual assault; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Designating the month of April 2010 as "Sexual |
9 | Assault Awareness Month" will allow residents of this |
10 | Commonwealth to learn more about preventing sexual violence; |
11 | therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of April 2010 |
13 | as "Sexual Assault Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. |
