| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Observing the month of January 2012 as "Pennsylvania Thrift |
2 | Month," observing the week of January 17 through 23, 2012, as |
3 | "National Thrift Week" and calling on individuals, families |
4 | and government at all levels to exercise thrift and fiscal |
5 | responsibility. |
6 | WHEREAS, Annual "National Thrift Week" observances from 1916 |
7 | through 1966 highlighted the value of hard work and fiscal |
8 | discipline and the cultivation of thrift as an American ideal; |
9 | and |
10 | WHEREAS, Communities nationwide first celebrated "National |
11 | Thrift Week" in 1916 with the opening of school savings accounts |
12 | for children and workplace savings programs; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The 1916 observance was launched on January 17, the |
14 | birthday anniversary of early American inventor, author, |
15 | printer, scientist, philanthropist, statesman and diplomat |
16 | Benjamin Franklin, who was recognized as the "American apostle |
17 | of thrift"; and |
18 | WHEREAS, "National Thrift Week" is no longer celebrated or |
19 | fully recognized; and |
20 | WHEREAS, The nation and many individuals and families are |

1 | facing difficult financial conditions today; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Recession, unemployment and widespread pay cuts have |
3 | spurred individuals and governments to reassess financial |
4 | practices; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Restoring and instilling thrift and fiscal |
6 | responsibility as guiding principles for individuals and |
7 | governments can aid our return to an era of sound financial |
8 | management and economic prosperity; therefore be it |
9 | RESOLVED, That the Senate observe the month of January 2012 |
10 | as "Pennsylvania Thrift Month," observe the week of January 17 |
11 | through 23, 2012, as "National Thrift Week" and call on |
12 | individuals, families and government at all levels to exercise |
13 | thrift and fiscal responsibility. |
