A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life and expressing condolences on the death of

2

Maje McDonnell.

3

WHEREAS, Maje McDonnell was best known as the head coach of

4

the Philadelphia Phillies in 1950 when they were known as the

5

1950 Whiz Kids who advanced to the World Series; and

6

WHEREAS, Mr. McDonnell began his professional baseball career

7

in 1947 as a batting-practice pitcher after a successful stint

8

as an assistant basketball coach at Villanova University; and

9

WHEREAS, A product of the Port Richmond section of

10

Philadelphia, Mr. McDonnell was dubbed by his childhood friends

11

as "the little major-leaguer" because of this obsession with

12

baseball; and

13

WHEREAS, Mr. McDonnell served as captain of the baseball and

basketball teams at both Northeast High and Villanova and was

2

inducted into the Villanova Hall of Fame in 1984; and

3

WHEREAS, He served for three years in World War II, where he

4

earned a combat badge, five battle stars and a Bronze Star; and

5

WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Coach" by the Phillies

6

organization, there were only a few home games Mr. McDonnell did

7

not witness in person since joining the organization; and

8

WHEREAS, Maje matched and exceeded Connie Mack's record of 54

9

years with a Philadelphia team; and

10

WHEREAS, It is believed that Mr. McDonnell is the only person

11

to have been in possession of every Phillies championship ring

12

produced representing the pennants of 1950, 1980, 1983, 1993,

13

2008 and 2009; and

14

WHEREAS, On July 8, 2010, Maje McDonnell died at the age of

15

89 and is survived by his wife Millie; his three daughters,

16

Mildred Mary, Kathleen and Maureen; and two grandsons, Jameson

17

McDonnell and Major Lee VanWinkle and numerous friends and fans;

18

therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life

20

and express condolences on the death of Maje "Coach" McDonnell.
