| AN ACT |
| |
1 | Designating the bridge that connects South Williamsport to |
2 | Williamsport, known as the Market Street Bridge, carrying | <-- |
3 | U.S. Route 15 over the Susquehanna River in Loyalsock |
4 | Township, Lycoming County, as the Carl E. Stotz Memorial | <-- |
5 | Little League Bridge. |
6 | The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |
7 | hereby enacts as follows: |
8 | Section 1. Carl E. Stotz Memorial Little League Bridge. | <-- |
9 | (a) Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as |
10 | follows: |
11 | (1) Carl E. Stotz was born in 1910 in Williamsport, |
12 | Pennsylvania, and was a lifelong Williamsport resident who |
13 | later served as a local tax collector. He is best known for |
14 | founding Little League Baseball, which later evolved into an |
15 | international organization. |
16 | (2) February 20, 2010, is the 100th anniversary of his |

1 | birth. |
2 | (3) Carl E. Stotz stumbled over a lilac bush during a |
3 | backyard game of catch with his two young nephews in 1938 and |
4 | came up with the idea for Little League Baseball, which has |
5 | become the world's largest organized youth sports program. |
6 | Little League Baseball grew from three teams to nearly |
7 | 200,000 teams in all 50 states and more than 80 countries. |
8 | (4) It is largely through Carl E. Stotz's endeavors that |
9 | the City of Williamsport has become world renowned as the |
10 | birthplace of Little League Baseball. Every August, the 16 |
11 | best teams in the world converge on Little League Baseball's |
12 | headquarters in South Williamsport to play the annual Little |
13 | League World Series before thousands of fans in games |
14 | televised around the world. |
15 | (b) Designation.--The bridge that connects South |
16 | Williamsport to Williamsport, known as the Market Street Bridge, |
17 | carrying U.S. Route 15 over the Susquehanna River in Loyalsock | <-- |
18 | Township, Lycoming County, is hereby designated and shall be |
19 | known as the Carl E. Stotz Memorial Little League Bridge. | <-- |
20 | (c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and |
21 | maintain appropriate signs to traffic in both directions to |
22 | indicate the designation under subsection (b). |
23 | Section 2. Effective date. |
24 | This act shall take effect in 60 days. |
