STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 8409--A IN SENATE February 24, 2022 ___________ Introduced by Sen. KENNEDY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Elections -- committee discharged, bill amended, ordered reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to reducing the signature requirement for petitions for candidates for the school board of the city of Buffalo The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Subparagraph 1 of paragraph d of subdivision 10 of section 2 2553 of the education law, as amended by chapter 561 of the laws of 3 2019, is amended to read as follows: 4 (1) Such election for such office shall be governed by the provisions 5 of the election law in the same manner as candidates for office general- 6 ly to be elected by the voters of the city of Buffalo. Notwithstanding 7 section 6-142 of the election law, each such candidate for election as a 8 member of the board of education from a city school subdistrict shall be 9 required to file a petition containing signatures of at least [five] two 10 hundred registered voters of such city school subdistrict in which he is 11 a candidate and each candidate for election to the board of education by 12 the voters at large shall be required to file a petition containing the 13 signatures of at least [one thousand] four hundred registered voters of 14 the city of Buffalo. 15 § 2.
