STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 6681 2017-2018 Regular Sessions IN SENATE June 13, 2017 ___________ Introduced by Sen. VALESKY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the elder law, in relation to establishing guidelines for the development of community-based programs The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Article 2 of the elder law is amended by adding a new title 2 5 to read as follows: 3 TITLE 5 4 AGE FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES 5 Section 301. Guidelines for development of community-based programs. 6 § 301. Guidelines for development of community-based programs. In 7 order to encourage the development of activities and programs that 8 support older adults within communities, the office shall develop mate- 9 rials and guidelines for the development of community-based programs. 10 Such guidelines and materials shall be designed to assist local area 11 agencies on aging, non-profit entities, and community-based organiza- 12 tions that wish to establish programs for seniors in their local commu- 13 nities. In choosing what types of programs for which to develop guide- 14 lines and materials, the office shall focus on programs that have been 15 successful in supporting older adults in the community and those that 16 provide innovative approaches to existing challenges. Areas of concern, 17 for which encouraging the spread of locally-based programs would be most 18 beneficial, shall include, but not be limited to: (a) supporting the 19 ability of older adults to stay in their homes, both through services 20 and assistance with chores and maintenance; (b) general safety and 21 prevention of abuse and exploitation; (c) socialization, both with peers 22 and with individuals of all ages; (d) opportunities for involvement in 23 the local community, including volunteerism; and (e) encouraging older 24 adults who wish to continue their career or embark on a new career path. 25 § 2.
