Bill Title: Directs counties and the city of New York to contact a veteran's organization to provide for the disposition of the unclaimed remains of a deceased veteran when such veteran has no next of kin or other person designated to provide for the disposition of his or her remains.

        Introduced  by Sens. GIANARIS, AVELLA -- read twice and ordered printed,
          and when printed to be committed to the Committee on  Veterans,  Home-
          land Security and Military Affairs
        AN  ACT to amend the executive law, in relation to authorizing the divi-
          sion of  veterans'  affairs  to  provide  for  the  interment  of  the
          unclaimed remains of veterans
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
     1    Section 1. Section 353 of the executive law is amended by adding a new
     2  subdivision 12-a to read as follows:
     3    12-a. To provide, in cooperation with veterans service  organizations,
     4  for  the  interment  of  the  unclaimed remains of veterans.   The state
     5  director shall consult with veterans service  organizations  to  analyze
     6  the  scope  of  the  issue  of  unclaimed  remains  of veterans. For the
     7  purposes of this subdivision, "unclaimed remains  of  a  veteran"  shall
     8  mean  the  remains  of a veteran that are considered unclaimed under the
     9  laws of this state and/or any other state of the United States.
    10    § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of January next  succeed-
    11  ing the date on which it shall have become a law.
