Assembly Resolution No. 138 BY: M. of A. Brabenec COMMEMORATING the 60th Anniversary of the Sloatsburg Public Library WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the quality and character of life in the communities across the great State of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citizenry; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Sloatsburg Public Library; and WHEREAS, The Sloatsburg Public Library dates its origin to 1959, when a committee of six, appointed by then Mayor John McAlevey, accumulated 6,000 used books and shelved them in the meeting room of the Village Office; Susanne Dowler, longtime resident of Sloatsburg and a teacher in the Ramapo School District, was the library's co-founder and first Director; and WHEREAS, Part of the Ramapo Catskill Library System cooperative, the Sloatsburg Public Library now has a total floor space of approximately 5,500 square feet, and is open 62 hours a week, including Sundays; and WHEREAS, The Sloatsburg Public Library's Community Room hosts many events, and the Children's Room is home to weekly activities that help promote early childhood learning; and WHEREAS, The original 6,000 volumes have expanded to over 28,000; furthermore, the Sloatsburg Public Library has 3,000 non-book items such as DVDs, magazines, CDs and books on CD; as the community has grown, so has the library; and WHEREAS, The Sloatsburg Public Library's monthly programs and ongoing clubs for adults and children offer opportunities to learn, exchange information and become a part of the community; and WHEREAS, While house cleaning the library, a piece of old Sloatsburg and Suffern was discovered; a 1942 edition of the Suffern High School Aremac yearbook was found wedged behind a bookcase in the biography room; it is a picture perfect look into what it was like in the 1940s; and WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, the Sloatsburg Public Library is committed to bringing people, information, resources, and programs together to enrich and build a better community which fosters a lifelong love of learning; and WHEREAS, The Sloatsburg Public Library is under the able leadership of its Board of Trustees: President Jane Thompson, Vice President Joy O'Leary, Secretary Christine Goldman, Financial Officer Richard Cook, Trustee Darrell Frasier, and Trustee George O'Dell; Annmarie McAnany also serves as the Library Director; and WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Sloatsburg Public Library may take just pride in its purposeful growth, as it looks forward to continuing to serve the educational, cultural and intellectual needs of the community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Sloatsburg Public Library; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the Sloatsburg Public Library.
