BY: M. of A. Ra

COMMEMORATING the 90th Anniversary of the Parish
of Saint Anne in Garden City, New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Parish of Saint Anne in Garden
City, New York; and

WHEREAS, The Catholic community in the Garden City and Stewart Manor
villages needed a place of worship to accommodate their rapid and
sustained growth; by 1929, and with the support of the local Diocese,
they were granted permission to establish Saint Anne's Parish and, in
June of that same year, the community celebrated its first Mass; and

WHEREAS, That first Mass was celebrated in a temporary location on
Covert Avenue in Stewart Manor while the still growing Catholic
community raised funds in order to purchase a plot of land and construct
a permanent church building; and

WHEREAS, Finally, on June 22, 1930, the first church building was
completed and a dedication Mass was held as the community celebrated
their new spiritual home; and

WHEREAS, The still growing faith community rapidly outgrew the
modest first church building and by the 1960s, a convent and rectory
were constructed; continued growth meant that by 1964, the new and
current church building was completed and dedicated at its present
location on Dartmouth Street in Garden City; and

WHEREAS, Today, 90 years after its founding, the Parish of Saint
Anne is home to more than 3,400 parishioners, and still maintains a
school which was established in 1951 which boasts 500 students; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Parish of Saint Anne,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
