Assembly Resolution No. 109 BY: M. of A. Ra COMMEMORATING the 90th Anniversary of the Parish of Saint Anne in Garden City, New York WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Parish of Saint Anne in Garden City, New York; and WHEREAS, The Catholic community in the Garden City and Stewart Manor villages needed a place of worship to accommodate their rapid and sustained growth; by 1929, and with the support of the local Diocese, they were granted permission to establish Saint Anne's Parish and, in June of that same year, the community celebrated its first Mass; and WHEREAS, That first Mass was celebrated in a temporary location on Covert Avenue in Stewart Manor while the still growing Catholic community raised funds in order to purchase a plot of land and construct a permanent church building; and WHEREAS, Finally, on June 22, 1930, the first church building was completed and a dedication Mass was held as the community celebrated their new spiritual home; and WHEREAS, The still growing faith community rapidly outgrew the modest first church building and by the 1960s, a convent and rectory were constructed; continued growth meant that by 1964, the new and current church building was completed and dedicated at its present location on Dartmouth Street in Garden City; and WHEREAS, Today, 90 years after its founding, the Parish of Saint Anne is home to more than 3,400 parishioners, and still maintains a school which was established in 1951 which boasts 500 students; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Parish of Saint Anne, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the Parish of Saint Anne.
