Senate Resolution No. 3121 BY: Senator HARCKHAM MOURNING the death of Gregory Amato, former Carmel Police Chief, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to convey its grateful appreciation and heartfelt regret in recognition of the loss of a courageous officer who dedicated his purposeful life and career in faithful service to his family, Putnam County and the Carmel Police Department; and WHEREAS, Gregory Amato of Mahopac, New York, died on Saturday, April 18, 2020, at the age of 77; and WHEREAS, Gregory Amato was born to the late Natale and May (Gregory) Amato in New York City on September 29, 1942; at the young age of seven, he and his family moved to Mahopac, and he graduated from high school in 1960; and WHEREAS, Following in his father's footsteps, Gregory Amato worked for the Coca-Cola Company in New York City before realizing he wanted to spend his career helping his local community; in 1964, he joined the Carmel Police Department, and throughout his tenure, he held every rank from Patrolman to Chief before retiring in 1998 after 34 years of service; and WHEREAS, In addition to his exceptional work with the Carmel Police Department, Gregory Amato volunteered his time and energies to numerous worthy organizations including the New York Federation of Police, Lake Mahopac United Methodist Church, Lake Mahopac Rotary Club, the Putnam County Cornell Cooperative Extension, United Way, Salvation Army, the Greater Mahopac/Carmel Chamber of Commerce, and the American Red Cross of Greater New York where he lead the Putnam County Disaster Action Team; and WHEREAS, Gregory Amato was also a great local history buff and served as a trustee for the Carmel Historical Society and co-authored the historical textbook, Images of America: Mahopac; and WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his community, Gregory Amato was the recipient of numerous accolades such as an award from NY VFW District 2 for outstanding contributions to the veterans in the community, the 2003 Community Service Award from the Lake Mahopac Rotary Club, the 2005 Marian Iverson Citizenship Award from the Salvation Army, the 2008 Ruth Dain Voluntary Service Award, and the 2009 American Red Cross of Greater New York's Award for Disaster Planning and Response, as well as the 2014 Putnam County Historian's History Publication Award; and WHEREAS, This remarkable man was also selected as the 1984 Grand Marshal of the Mahopac Italian American Club's Columbus Day Parade, named an honorary member of both the Mahopac-Carmel Chamber of Commerce and the Brewster Rotary Club, and in 2009, the 4-H Fair was dedicated in his honor; most recently, he became a six-time Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International; and WHEREAS, Former Chief Gregory Amato's record of unimpeachable fairness will endure as an inspiration and living legacy to all who had the privilege and honor of knowing him; and WHEREAS, The family of former Chief Gregory Amato, including his loving wife of 39 years, Margery, one son, Christopher, and two daughters, Laura and Angela, as well as the members of the Carmel Police Department, and the citizens of New York, have lost a devoted husband, father and friend, as well as an eminent police officer and loyal friend; he was recognized as a pillar within his community, always seeking to build the firmest foundations upon which Putnam County, New York State and our Nation will continue to grow and prosper; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Gregory Amato, former Carmel Police Chief, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the family of Gregory Amato.
