Senate Resolution No. 1706

        HONORING   Ana   Maria  Torres  Ramirez  upon  the
        occasion of her  induction  into  the  International
        Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum

  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding professionals  in  the  boxing  industry  who  distinguished
themselves    through    their    exceptional   performance,   attaining
unprecedented success and the highest level of personal achievement; Ana
Maria Torres Ramirez is one such individual and her life of achievements
inspired others and contributed to the respect  and  admiration  of  the
sport of boxing; and

  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Ana Maria Torres Ramirez upon the occasion of  her  induction  into  the
International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum; she will be honored within
the  Modern  category of boxers at the 35th Anniversary celebration from
June 6-9, 2024, in Canastota, New York; and

  WHEREAS, Born Ana Maria Torres  Ramirez  on  January  25,  1980,  in
Ciudad  Nezahualcoyt,  Mexico,  "La  Guerrera"  began training with Jose
Morales and turned professional in  1999  with  a  four-round  win  over
future  world  champion Mariana Juarez in the first of their three bouts
(2-0-1); and

  WHEREAS, Ana Maria Torres Ramirez captured the Mexican  bantamweight
(twice)   and   NABF   super   flyweight  titles  before  unsuccessfully
challenging Kwang Ok Kim for the WBC bantamweight strap (L 10) in  2006;
she  rebounded  to  TKO  Mayela  Perez in six rounds for the interim WBC
super flyweight title and gained full recognition with  a  10-round  win
over Dahianna Santana in 2007; and

  WHEREAS,  Ana Maria Torres Ramirez lost the title to Myung Ok Ryu (L
10) and, following a draw in the rematch,  won  the  interim  belt  from
Esmeralda  Moreno  (W  10) in 2008; she assumed full championship status
with a fourth round  TKO  over  Paulina  Cardona  to  begin  her  second
championship  reign  that would include 10 successful title defenses and
wins over such standouts as Ava Knight (W 10), Alesia Graf  (W  10)  and
Hollie Dunaway (TKO 6); and

  WHEREAS,  In  2011,  Ana Maria Torres Ramirez met Jackie Nava twice,
drawing in the first encounter and scoring a 10-round win in the rematch
for the WBC diamond bantamweight belt; and

  WHEREAS, Renowned for her textbook boxing style, the 5' 4" Ana Maria
Torres Ramirez retired in 2012, with a professional record of 28-3-3 (16
KOs); in addition to boxing in her home country, she  also  competed  in
bouts in the Dominican Republic, North Korea, and the United States; and

  WHEREAS,  Ana Maria Torres Ramirez clearly contributed to the spirit
of excellence which is a tradition of the International Boxing  Hall  of
Fame; and

  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  sense  of  this  Legislative  Body  that when
individuals of such  outstanding  accomplishments  are  brought  to  our
attention,  they  should be recognized by all the citizens of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it

  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Ana Maria Torres Ramirez upon the occasion of her  induction  into
the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum; and be it further

  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Ana Maria Torres Ramirez.
