Senate Resolution No. 1334 BY: Senator GRIFFO CONGRATULATING Lloyd Walsh upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th Birthday WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commemorate and recognize certain milestones celebrated by citizens of this great Empire State; and WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Lloyd Walsh upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th Birthday; and WHEREAS, Born on January 2, 1922, in Oswego, New York, Lloyd Walsh attended elementary and secondary schools before enrolling at Oswego Teacher's College where he met his future wife, the former June Wood; and WHEREAS, Lloyd Walsh proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army with General George Patton in the Third Army Division; during this time, this brave soldier served with honor and distinction in France, and was involved in heavy combat, most notably during the Battle of the Bulge for which his service was officially recognized; and WHEREAS, Upon the completion of his military service, Lloyd Walsh enrolled in the Radio Department of Syracuse University through the GI Bill after witnessing legendary network sports announcer Ted Husing commentating a Cornell football game he attended in 1938; and WHEREAS, Lloyd Walsh began his illustrious career in broadcasting at an FM radio station in Hornell, New York; he and his bride then moved back to Utica, where he became a radio salesperson at WGAT 1100 while also announcing play-by-play sports broadcasts; and WHEREAS, Due to his great success at WGAT, Lloyd Walsh was approached by Dick Clark Sr., the manager of WRUN AM and FM, and he joined its team; and WHEREAS, During this time, his career prospered and he was eventually promoted to the position of Manager; he has worked with countless celebrities of the 1950s and 60s, including Danny Fusco, Carl Swanson, Dick Cerri, Bruce Rector, Dick Thomas, Alan Cole, Jack Murphy, Dick Clark Jr. and Lou Barile; and WHEREAS, Furthermore, this extraordinary man became the voice of Colgate University Football and he did the Annual Hall of Fame play-by-play in Cooperstown; and WHEREAS, Lloyd Walsh has been the proud recipient of numerous awards and accolades, including the many honors bestowed upon him by the East Utica Optimist Club; he was also inducted into the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Lloyd Walsh and his beloved wife, who passed away in the early 1990s, raised five wonderful children, Kathleen, Nancy, Jeanne, Doug and David; and WHEREAS, In his retirement, Lloyd Walsh remains a bright shining star in Utica, New York broadcasting history; his steadfast and unwavering commitment to his family, friends and community will forever stand as a paradigm and inspiration for others; and WHEREAS, Lloyd Walsh, with his zest for life, has truly enhanced the lives of all those who are lucky enough to know such an amazing man; and WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian has experienced the incredible joys and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina and courage to savor a full life; and WHEREAS, Lloyd Walsh has enriched the lives of those around him through his joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recognize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to congratulate Lloyd Walsh upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th Birthday; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Lloyd Walsh.
