STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 1172 2023-2024 Regular Sessions IN ASSEMBLY January 13, 2023 ___________ Introduced by M. of A. VANEL -- read once and referred to the Committee on Governmental Operations AN ACT to amend the executive law, in relation to requiring fire extin- guishers in every rented dwelling The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Section 378 of the executive law is amended by adding a new 2 subdivision 5-e to read as follows: 3 5-e. Standards for installation of fire extinguishers shall require 4 installation of such extinguishers in all multiple dwellings at least 5 one per floor, with the maximum travel distance between extinguishers 6 not to exceed seventy-five feet. Such fire extinguishers shall be of 7 such manufacture, design and installation standards as are established 8 by the council. For purposes of this subdivision, multiple dwelling 9 means a dwelling which is either rented or leased to be occupied, or is 10 occupied as the temporary or permanent residence or home of three or 11 more families living independently of each other, including but not 12 limited to the following: a tenement, flat house, maisonette apartment, 13 apartment house, apartment hotel, tourist house, bachelor apartment, 14 studio apartment, duplex apartment, kitchenette apartment, hotel, lodg- 15 ing house, rooming house, boarding house, boarding and nursery school, 16 furnished room house, club, sorority house, fraternity house, college 17 and school dormitory, convalescent, old age or nursing homes or resi- 18 dences. 19 § 2.
