       AN ACT to amend the public officers law, in relation to  filling  vacan-
         cies in the office of lieutenant-governor
         THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
       BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
    1    Section 1. The public officers law is amended by adding a new  section
    2  44 to read as follows:
    3    S  44. FILLING VACANCIES IN THE OFFICE OF LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR. IN CASE
    4  OF VACANCY IN THE OFFICE OF LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR  ALONE,  DUE  TO  DEATH,
    5  RESIGNATION,  REMOVAL  FROM OFFICE, OR ASCENSION TO GOVERNOR, THE OFFICE
    6  OF LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR SHALL BE FILLED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE TERM  BY
    7  APPOINTMENT  OF  THE GOVERNOR WITHIN THIRTY DAYS OF SUCH VACANCY, DEATH,
    8  RESIGNATION, REMOVAL FROM OFFICE, OR ASCENSION, SUBJECT TO  CONFIRMATION
    9  BY  A MAJORITY VOTE IN THE SENATE AND A MAJORITY VOTE IN THE ASSEMBLY TO
   10  BE HELD WITHIN THIRTY DAYS OF SUCH APPOINTMENT.
   11    S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
