STATEMENT
This resolution commemorates the 100th anniversary of the First Dáil in Ireland. The First Dáil refers to the first meeting of the unicameral parliament of the Republic of Ireland. In the 1918 general elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom, Irish members of parliament won a landslide victory. On January 21, 1919, instead of taking their seats in the parliament, the Irish members met in Dublin's Mansion House to declare Ireland's independence and establish an alternative parliament called Dáil Éireann. To honor the resolve and sacrifice of the people of Ireland and those who did not lose their determination to advance Irish independence, the State of New Jersey commemorates the 100th anniversary of the sitting of the First Dáil Éireann.
