A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE EAST CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL "LADY HORNETS" GOLF TEAM FROM HURLEY, MISSISSIPPI, AND HEAD COACH KRISTI WALKER FOR WINNING THE TEAM'S FIRST-EVER STATE 5A CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, we join the citizens, fans and supporters of East Central High School in Hurley, Jackson County, Mississippi, in recognizing the "Lady Hornets" Golf Team for winning their first-ever State 5A Championship on October 24, 2023; and
WHEREAS, the "Lady Hornets" had a very impressive two days in the tee box and on the fairway at Kirkwood National Golf Club, which is located in Holly Springs, Mississippi. The State Tournament consisted of two, 18-hole rounds. After round one, East Central held a one-stroke lead over Lafayette High School. East Central won the championship by a five-stroke margin and an overall score of 382; and
WHEREAS, Junior, Martey Dunton, led the "Lady Hornets" and received the Low Medalist Golf Award for the State Championship; and
WHEREAS, team members include: Madison Holcomb, Avery Rogers, Martey Dunton, Ainsleigh Butler and Head Coach Kristi Walker; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes whose first-ever championship has brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the East Central High School "Lady Hornets" Golf Team from Hurley, Mississippi, and Head Coach Kristi Walker for winning the team's first-ever State 5A Championship, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors out best wishes for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Head Coach Kristi Walker and East Central Principal Jim Hughey, forwarded to the Jackson County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
