A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING MRS. PAULINE GERMANY MATTHEWS ON THE OCCASION OF HER 103RD BIRTHDAY ON MARCH 28, 2013, AND EXTENDING HEARTFELT WISHES FOR MANY MORE YEARS OF GOOD HEALTH, PEACE, HAPPINESS AND JOY.

     WHEREAS, a virtuous woman among countless individuals, Mrs. Pauline Germany Matthews will reach, yet another, milestone on March 28, 2013, when she celebrates her 103rd birthday with family, friends and loved ones; and

     WHEREAS, throughout her life, Mrs. Pauline G. Matthews has proudly worn the title of wife, mother, grandmother, business owner, friend and Christian, and has a worth that far exceeds the price of rubies, as she has withstood the test of time and abounds in wisdom and knowledge to be the matriarch of several generations; and

     WHEREAS, she is a lifelong resident of Union, Mississippi, who was born to the late Samuel Jackson Germany and Josie Mae Ozborn Germany on March 28, 1910, in Neshoba County, Mississippi, where she was adored by her parents and raised in a loving home; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Matthews has loved one man on this earth, the late Mr. Hugh Waddell Matthews, to whom she united in the holy bonds of matrimony in 1933 and remained until he passed in 1979; and

     WHEREAS, their love gave birth to two children Polly, now of Union, Mississippi and Milton, now of Pearl, Mississippi, who have had careers in public education, serving as teachers, counselors and administrators because their mother, Mrs. Pauline Matthews, first chartered an educational career pathway when she taught in Neshoba County Public Schools before marrying her beloved Hugh Matthews; and

     WHEREAS, during the course of their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Matthews purchased a general store in 1940 and added a feed mill in 1956 by converting a warehouse, the general store evolved into a grocery store, which was located on one of two main streets in Union, and the feed mill stood on a separate lot adjacent to the GM&O Railroad; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Matthews was an astute business partner for her husband as the couple were also early investors in the Central Mississippi Poultry Producing Industry; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Matthews has seen the transformational changes of the United States of America, and has relied wholeheartedly on God as the driving force to sustain and power her through the circumstances, trials and triumphs of life; and

     WHEREAS, an active member of Bluff Springs Church of God, where she is the oldest member and the only church she has attended since birth, and where she has been active in all phases of church life, including service on various administrative boards and committees; and

     WHEREAS, her profound faith has helped her lead an exemplary life, reflecting the love of Christ and imparting the values of self-assuredness, perseverance, service and benevolence, obtained with her years of infinite wisdom, into the lives of all she has encountered along this journey; and

     WHEREAS, trusted and loved throughout the community, Mrs. Matthews is a 50-year member of The Present Day Club, affiliated with the Mississippi Federation of Women's Clubs, where she remains an Honorary Member; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor such a remarkable, well-loved Christian woman, as Mrs. Matthews on the celebration of her 103rd birthday, whose many years of tireless service in her community and to her family epitomizes the virtuous woman:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby congratulate Mrs. Pauline Germany Matthews on the occasion of her 103rd birthday on March 28, 2013 and extend heartfelt wishes for many more years of good health, peace, happiness and joy.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Pauline G. Matthews and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
