A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE WEST POINT HIGH SCHOOL GREEN WAVE FOOTBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE 2009 MHSAA Class 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, the West Point High School Green Wave Football Team had an exceptional 2009 season with an outstanding record of 14-1 and completed the season by capturing the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 5A State Championship; and
WHEREAS, the Green Wave Football Team earned the titles of Division 1-5A Champions and Class 5A North State Champions before winning the coveted Class 5A State Championship; and
WHEREAS, West Point High School's football team has been victorious as state champions in years past, five times in the 4A and 5A classifications and has continued the tradition by remaining one of the most accomplished football teams having now recently returned to Class 5A; and
WHEREAS, the Green Wave Team was superbly coached and inspired by Coach Chris Chambless who has broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and
WHEREAS, Coach Chris Chambless has brought additional honor to himself and to West Point High School by being selected the Mississippi Association of Coaches Coach of the Year and the Commercial Dispatch Area Coach of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Coach Chambless and Assistant Coaches Lee J. Grisham, Floizel Wilson, Rickey Melton, Casey Welch, Ken Pickens, Brett Morgan, Roger Burton and Brian Sellers, and Athletic Director Dennis Allen earned the honor of being named the Division 1-5A Coaching Staff of the Year; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the overall hard work of the team, several players have been recognized for their hard work, dedication and superior play this season including the naming of the following players to the 2009 Mississippi Association of Coaches All-State Team: Michael Carr, Lakenderic Thomas, Curtis Virges, Desmond Boyd and Matthew Lewis; and
WHEREAS, along with numerous state and local awards, the West Point coaching staff bestowed West Point Coaches Awards upon the following players: Curtis Virges, Matthew Lewis, Garry Hughes, Desmond Boyd, Michael Carr, Adrian Smith and Xavier Hogan; and
WHEREAS, the Green Wave Team has developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a superb degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring great honor to West Point High School; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when demonstrated by the young people of our state, who are its future:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the West Point High School Green Wave Football Team and Coach Chris Chambless for their outstanding 2009 season, for winning the Class 5A State Championship and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to West Point High School, Coach Chris Chambless and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
