House Concurrent Resolution 65

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING LAURA LEE LEWIS OF BROOKHAVEN, MISSISSIPPI, ON BECOMING MISS MISSISSIPPI'S OUTSTANDING TEEN OF MISSISSIPPI.

            WHEREAS, Ms. Laura Lee Lewis, a native of Brookhaven, Mississippi, is the 2009 Miss Mississippi's Outstanding Teen; and

     WHEREAS, in August 2009, with the Mississippi's Outstanding Teen crown adorning her head, Ms. Lewis competed for the Miss America's Outstanding Teen; and

     WHEREAS, on Saturday, January 30, 2010, Ms. Lewis sang on national television in the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada, bringing the Magnolia State much pride and delight; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lewis is active in her communities of both Brookhaven and Lincoln County, promoting her personal platform, "H.E.R.O. - Encouraging Children to Make Good Choices"; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lewis has developed four guidelines to help youth remember how to be like the superheroes, by using the word "HERO":

     H    Honor your parents, be honorable, and most of all honor yourself;

     E    Excel in everything you do;

     R    Reach for goals;

     O    Overcome obstacles through positive actions/reactions; and

     WHEREAS, her platform empowers children at a young age not to give in to peer pressure and to stay true to who they are by giving them the model of becoming the superhero they aspire to be, as well as easy, memorable steps to follow; and

     WHEREAS, by giving children a clear picture of what it takes to become a superhero and person of integrity, she is helping them to be successful and make good choices throughout their adolescent years and ultimately their lives; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lewis has been asked to sit on the Department of Health Teen Summit panel, sponsored by Jackson State University (JSU), debating the effects of hip-hop culture on teens; and

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi Department of Health Teen Summit panel, is a teen empowerment seminar focusing on the effects of hip-hop culture on teens featuring participation on the panel by students, experts and celebrity guests with the purpose of raising awareness about issues affecting America's teenagers; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lewis is a rising junior at Brookhaven High School, where she is an honor roll student and recipient of several scholastic awards; and

      WHEREAS, Ms. Lewis has received numerous community endorsements and has presented her program to elementary school classes, student bodies, churches, club meetings and parties; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lewis's goal is to present her program to Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the Magnolia State, and eventually the nation; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lewis is active in community and school theatre having played lead roles in "Grease" and many other high school performances, and she has won many overall talent contests throughout the State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lewis is a featured vocalist on a compilation album for Airtight Records and she has performed at Walt Disney World in Florida and appeared on television in the Walt Disney Christmas Parade in 2008; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lewis is the daughter of Mark and Lorin Lewis of Brookhaven and the niece of Secretary of the Senate Tressa Guynes; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize the accomplishments of our young adults such as Ms. Laura Lee Lewis who brings honor to our state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Miss Mississippi's Outstanding Teen for 2009, Laura Lee Lewis of Brookhaven, Mississippi, and extend to her and her family our best wishes for future success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Ms. Laura Lee Lewis, her family and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
