House Concurrent Resolution 13

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMEMORATING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MR. SAMUEL LARRY RICHEY.

     WHEREAS, it is written in Ecclesiastes 3:1 that "To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the Heaven," and as such, on Saturday, July 17, 2021, the immaculate author and finisher of our soul's destiny summoned the mortal presence of dearly beloved, Mr. Samuel Larry Richey, to eternal rest, rendering great sorrow and loss to his family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi and the City of Pontotoc, Mississippi, lost a wonderful friend, loving husband and father, revered basketball coach and dedicated community leader with the passing of Mr. Richey, and there is now a hush in our hearts as we come together to pay our respects to the memory of one who has been called to join that innumerable heavenly caravan; and

     WHEREAS, Samuel Larry Richey was a man of uncompromised faith and a member of Asbury Methodist Church, and he now enjoys the eternal peace described in Luke 2:29, "Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word"; and

     WHEREAS, in 1958, Mr. Richey joined an elite fraternity of soldiers in the United States Army, where he courageously served until 1960, and after his time in the military, he received his bachelor's degree in business from Mississippi State University in 1963; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Richey coached high school boys' basketball teams for 41 seasons, beginning his career at Jumpertown High School in 1967 before moving on to Wheeler, Baldwyn and finally Mantachie, and during his tenure, he won 913 games and six Mississippi State Championships and carried 17 teams to the Mississippi Boys' State Tournament; and

     WHEREAS, because of his winning record and unparalleled coaching abilities, Coach Richey was inducted into the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame, named "Coach of the Year" in Mississippi by The Clarion-Ledger, the Mississippi Sportswriters Association and the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal numerous times throughout his career and chosen as the NHS/ACA Region 5 Coach of the Year in 1992, representing the South-Central United States; and

     WHEREAS, when his basketball career ended, Coach Richey was the winningest high school basketball coach in Mississippi history, a truly remarkable feat, and he loved that he was able to coach his son, Clay, his nephew, Guy Gardner, and his grandson, Gardner Richey, during his career; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Richey was married to his loving wife Dale Gardner Richey for 57 years, and in his spare time, he enjoyed raising cattle, playing golf and watching western movies; and

     WHEREAS, the memory of Samuel Larry Richey, a man held in the highest regard by friends and family as an inspiring and precious gift from God, will continue to refresh the hearts and memories of his beloved survivors:  his wife, Dale; sons, Clark and Clay (Kyley); grandchildren, Gardner Richey (Lisa), Gabe Richey (Cassie), Reggie Richey (Katie), Maddux Richey, Rob Richey, Walker Richey, Kate Richey Easterling (Ethan), Lee-Anna Richey and Rylee Richey; nephews, Grant Gardner (Laura), Guy Gardner (Amelia), Phil Smith and Mark Smith; nieces, Lisa Clement (Stan) and Ginger Murphy (Matt); nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Dan Gardner (Sharon); lifelong friend, Deryl Saylors (Brenda); and a host of other relatives and friends; and

     WHEREAS, we encourage the family to find solace from the overwhelming sadness created by the earthly departure of their beloved family member in Revelation 21:4, wherein is recorded, "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away" and renewed in their faith that Mr. Samuel Larry Richey fulfilled the commandment of II Timothy 4:7 by having fought a good fight, finishing his course and keeping the faith until the hour of his departure was at hand; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and honor the lives of fine Mississippians, especially those such as Mr. Samuel Larry Richey, a gracious man who loved his family and friends unconditionally and coached and mentored numerous young men throughout Mississippi, bringing glory and honor to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commemorate the life and legacy of Mr. Samuel Larry Richey, and express deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Samuel Larry Richey and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
