To amend chapter 227, RSMo, by adding thereto one new section relating to the designation of the El Camino Real as a historic highway.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows:

Section A. Chapter 227, RSMo, is amended by adding thereto one new section, to be known as section 227.521, to read as follows:

227.521. 1. El Camino Real, a road built by Spain in the 1790's, is hereby designated as a historic highway. The department of transportation shall develop a logo marker for the historic highway and place the marker and informational signs along the portion of El Camino Real located on state roads and U.S. highways within the state.

            2. The department of transportation shall provide the logo marker and informational signs to counties and municipalities, at their request, for placement along the original El Camino Real that is not on a state road or U.S. highway.

            3. The department of transportation and the state historical society of Missouri shall determine the original route of El Camino Real which extended from St. Louis to New Madrid. In areas where the original route cannot be located upon an existing paved road, the closest paved road shall be designated as the route.
