1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the Hmong Association of Canada on their 40th Anniversary and Hmong
1.3New Year celebration.
1.4WHEREAS, many Hmong people left their homeland in Laos as a result of the French
1.5Indochina and Vietnam Wars and their commitment and dedication to the United States, France,
1.6and allies; and
1.7WHEREAS, the first Hmong refugee families made their home in Canada on July 1, 1979,
1.8arriving from Vinai refugee camp and in 1980, more Hmong families arrived from Nong Khai,
1.9Nam Yao, and Soptuang refugee camps through the sponsorships, resettlement programs, and
1.10support of many different entities including religious organizations; and
1.11WHEREAS, upon their arrival, they faced many social and economic barriers but were
1.12warmly welcomed by Canada, where they continued to grow and thrive as a community; and
1.13WHEREAS, now, there are approximately 805 Hmong residing in Canada, mainly
1.14concentrated within the province of Ontario; and
1.15WHEREAS, they have made substantial contributions to the country of Canada by bringing
1.16history, culture, and a robust work ethic to the community; and
1.17WHEREAS, they have been productive citizens of Canada and have founded the Hmong
1.18Association of Canada and the First Hmong Mennonite Church; and
1.19NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.20recognizes and acknowledges the Hmong Association of Canada's impact and contributions to the
1.21country of Canada and celebrate their 40th Anniversary and Hmong New Year celebration.
1.22BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.23enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.1Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the Hmong Association
2.2of Canada.
