1.1A Senate resolution
1.2in recognition of Minnesota Wear Red Day.
1.3WHEREAS, currently, some eight million women in the United States are living with
1.4heart disease, yet only one American woman in five believes that heart disease is her greatest
1.5health threat; and
1.6WHEREAS, 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart
1.7disease; 26 percent of women die within a year of suffering a heart attack, compared with 19
1.8percent of men; and
1.9WHEREAS, while one in 30 American women dies from breast cancer each year, one
1.10in three dies of cardiovascular disease; cardiovascular disease claims the lives of over 419,000
1.11American females each year, almost one death per minute; and
1.12WHEREAS, only 43 percent of African-American women and 44 percent of Hispanic
1.13women know that heart disease is their greatest health risk, compared with 60 percent of white
1.14women; nearly as many women die of heart disease, stroke, and all other cardiovascular diseases
1.15than the next three leading causes of death combined, including all cancers; and
1.16WHEREAS, only 16 percent of women surveyed in 2009 identified cardiovascular disease
1.17as the greatest health problem facing them; and
1.18WHEREAS, in women, heart disease is too often a silent killer; less than a third of women
1.19in a recent survey reported any early warning signs such as chest pain or discomfort before a
1.20heart attack, compared with most men; and
1.21WHEREAS, common symptoms for women included pain of the jaw, arm, or back, but
1.22most reported a delay in seeking treatments after the symptoms began of anywhere from 15
1.23minutes to two weeks; women are less likely to call 911 for themselves when experiencing
1.24symptoms of a heart attack than they are if someone else were having a heart attack; and
1.25WHEREAS, Go Red For Women® is the American Heart Association's national call to
1.26increase awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death for women, and to inspire
1.27women to take charge of their heart health; and
1.28NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that
1.29it recognizes Friday, February 3, 2012, as Minnesota Wear Red Day, and urges all citizens to
1.30commemorate this day by wearing the color red. By increasing awareness, speaking up about
1.31heart disease, and empowering women to reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease, we can
1.32save thousands of lives each year.
1.33BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare
1.34an enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of
1.35the Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the American
1.36Heart Association.
