1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to state government; reducing the number of members of the legislature;
1.3amending Minnesota Statutes 2012, sections 2.021; 2.031, subdivision 1.
1.4BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.5    Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 2.021, is amended to read:
1.62.021 NUMBER OF MEMBERS.
1.7For each legislature, until a new apportionment shall have been made, the senate is
1.8composed of 67 a total number of members equivalent to the number of congressional
1.9districts within this state multiplied by seven and the house of representatives is composed
1.10of 134 a total number of members equivalent to the number of congressional districts
1.11within this state multiplied by 14.

1.12    Sec. 2. Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 2.031, subdivision 1, is amended to read:
1.13    Subdivision 1. Legislative districts. The representatives in the senate and house
1.14of representatives are apportioned throughout the state in 67 a total number of senate
1.15districts equivalent to the number of congressional districts within this state multiplied
1.16by seven and 134 a total number of house of representatives districts equivalent to the
1.17number of congressional districts within this state multiplied by 14. Each senate district
1.18is entitled to elect one senator and each house of representatives district is entitled
1.19to elect one representative. A senate district may not be divided on the formation of
1.20a congressional district.

1.21    Sec. 3. EFFECTIVE DATE.
2.1Sections 1 and 2 are effective January 1, 2020, and apply to the legislature beginning
2.2with the apportionment provided for the 2022 general election.
