SENATE BILL NO. 743

March 06, 2024, Introduced by Senators BAYER, CAMILLERI and POLEHANKI and referred to the Committee on Education.

A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

"The revised school code,"

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1162a.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 1162a. (1) A principal or comparable administrator of a public school that operates a school library shall designate an individual to supervise students in the school library when a certified school librarian is not present and the school library is open to students. However, this individual shall not provide instruction to students unless the individual holds an appropriate Michigan teaching certificate.

(2) As used in this section, "certified school librarian" means either of the following, as applicable:

(a) A certificated teacher under section 1531 with an ND school librarian endorsement issued by the department.

(b) Until 2026, a certificated teacher under section 1531 who is in the process of obtaining an ND school librarian endorsement issued by the department.

Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days after the date it is enacted into law.

Enacting section 2. This amendatory act does not take effect unless all of the following bills of the 102nd Legislature are enacted into law:

(a) Senate Bill No. 742.

 

(b) Senate Bill No. 741.
