SENATE BILL No. 734
January 8, 2014, Introduced by Senators CASWELL, MARLEAU, JONES, HUNTER, JANSEN, BOOHER, COLBECK and PAPPAGEORGE and referred to the Committee on Government Operations.
A bill to designate December 6 of each year as "Utility
Workers Safety Awareness Day".
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 1. (1) The legislature recognizes that utility workers
put their lives on the line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days
a year. Utility workers regularly perform their duties along the
roadside at sites identified by rotating amber lights on the
utility vehicles and by signs and cones. Utility workers are
frequently endangered by drivers who do not slow down or provide
sufficient clearance.
(2) In commemoration of the significant role utility workers
play in our lives and to educate the public to "slow down and go
around" utility workers, just as they do for police officers,
firefighters, and ambulance personnel, the legislature designates
December 6 of each year as "Utility Workers Safety Awareness Day".
