House Resolution No. 236.
A resolution to declare April 2010 as Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, The members of the Michigan House of Representatives are dedicated to providing a safe and healthy environment to all children in Michigan. The citizens of Michigan recognize that child abuse and neglect are serious and growing problems affecting millions of our nation’s children; and
Whereas, Child abuse is a serious public health problem with scientific studies documenting the link between the abuse and neglect of children and a wide range of medical, emotional, psychological and behavioral disorders such as depression, alcoholism, drug abuse, severe obesity, juvenile delinquency; and
Whereas, In 2009, 29,401 children were abused or neglected in Michigan; and
Whereas, Community collaboration is necessary in order to provide for families at risk for child abuse and neglect, and to ensure a safe and secure future for Michigan's children; and
Whereas, This year's theme, "The Power of One” reminds us of the power of one person, one community, one dollar, one action in fight against abuse and neglect; and
Whereas, The "Pinwheels for Prevention" campaign will help to protect children from abuse and neglect throughout Michigan; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare April 2010 as Child Abuse Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
