her 90th birthday.

MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring Edith Vance-Jones
on her 90th birthday.
Whereas, Edith was born on April 8, 1923, to Mr. & Mrs.
James F. Powell of Indianapolis, Indiana;
Whereas, Edith attended Public School #26, Crispus
Attucks High School, and Indiana University-Purdue University
Indianapolis;
Whereas, Edith worked at RCA for 36 years before retiring
as a manager in 1979;
Whereas, Edith attributes her long and fulfilling life to her
priorities of God, family, and helping the community;
Whereas, After joining St. John Missionary Baptist Church in 1936, she served in a number of leadership positions, including Sunday School Superintendent, Master Sunday School Teacher, President of the Missionary Society, Deaconess, Trustee, President of the Indiana Progressive Baptist Convention Women's Division, and Chair of several committees in the Indiana Council of Churches;
Whereas, Edith's dedication to her faith led her to be a founding member of two different organizations through her church: the Juvenile Rehabilitation Group, which has visited a local juvenile rehabilitation center every month for over 50 years to provide spiritual guidance, and the Love Center, which has provided food and clothing to community residents for over 25 years;
Whereas, Within her community, Edith's leadership skills
have shined as President of a multitude of organizations,
including James Whitcomb Riley School #43 PTA, Arlington
High School PTA, Northside Neighborhood Community
Association, Devington Neighborhood Association, Cloud 9
Chapter of the American Business Women Association, and the
Crispus Attucks High School Class of 1941 Alumni Association ;
Whereas, Edith's leadership and consistent efforts in the
sector of public activism earned her a Jefferson Award in 1984 ;
Whereas, Edith has been fortunate enough to have two
great husbands, E.S. Vance and Charlie S. Jones, has raised six
wonderful children, and has been blessed with a number of
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
Whereas, Edith has traveled extensively throughout her life.
Some of her favorite moments from these trips are her baptism
in the Jordan River, worshiping with thousands of other
Christians in South Korea, the tours of New York, and
appreciating the scenery while driving to California: Therefore,
SECTION 1. The Indiana Senate honors Edith Vance-Jones on her 90th birthday.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to Edith Vance-Jones.
