Synopsis: Security deposits and motor vehicle liens. Prohibits a
landlord from requiring or accepting a lien on a motor vehicle that is
owned by a tenant as a security deposit or to secure the payment of rent
by the tenant.
Effective: July 1, 2012.

A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
property.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

SECTION 1. IC 32-31-3-13.5 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA
CODE AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS
[EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2012]: Sec. 13.5. A landlord may not:
(1) require; or
(2) accept;
a lien on a motor vehicle that is owned by a tenant as a security deposit or to secure the payment of rent by the tenant.
