        A RESOLUTION honoring the Penn High School Spell Bowl Team.
    

Whereas, The Indiana Academic Spell Bowl is a statewide competition;

    Whereas, The team is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors;

    Whereas, Unlike spelling bees, Spell Bowl participants write the words on answer sheets in rounds consisting of nine words; they do not spell out loud, and each team member contributes to a team score;

    Whereas, The Penn High School Spell Bowl Team is the

2011 Class One Indiana Spell Bowl State Champion, securing its 11th state title in 12 years;

    Whereas, Spell Bowl team members Maddy Anderson, Maaz Arif, Nitin Arora, Nisha Bhatt, Alex Cao, Christy Chang, Laura Harmon, Austin Heckaman, Leah Hershberger, Yifei Hu, Jenny Huang, Richard Jung, Neena Kallookulangara, Marija Lapkus, James McGinness, Sheena Shah, Nithin Varadharajan, and Andy Wang have enjoyed an outstanding season;

    Whereas, In addition to the state championship, the team won seven invitational meets and received 90 points, the highest regional qualifying score in the state;

    Whereas, The Penn High School Spell Bowl team garnered three perfect 90 scores this season, bringing the total to 26 perfect scores in the school's history;

    Whereas, This accomplishment is recognized as even more impressive as it is believed that there have been only 35 to 40 perfect scores in Indiana Spell Bowl history; and

    Whereas, Academic excellence such as this deserves special recognition: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives congratulates the Penn High School Spell Bowl team on its recent victory and wishes the team continued success in future competitions.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to the members of the Penn High School Spell Bowl Team, its coach, principal, and superintendent.
