RESOLUTION No. ________
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring the life of Katie Hall.
Whereas, Katie Hall was born Katie Beatrice Green on
April 3rd, 1938, in Mound Bayou, Mississippi;
Whereas, Congresswoman Hall's commitment to civil
rights, justice and opportunity for all people developed
throughout her formative years as she earned a Bachelor of
Science at Mississippi Valley State University and a Master
of Science from Indiana University;
Whereas, Congresswoman Hall
served with distinction in
the Indiana House of Representatives from 1974 until 1976;
Whereas, Congresswoman Hall also served as an
accomplished and valued member of the Indiana Senate from
1976 until 1982;
Whereas, Congresswoman Hall
became the first African-
American member of Congress from Indiana when she won
a special election to fill the vacancy created when
Congressman Adam Benjamin passed away in September of
1982;
Whereas, Congresswoman Hall led the effort to make the
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a national holiday
through her leadership and sponsorship of that historic bill
which was signed into law by President Reagan on
November 12th, 1983;
Whereas, Congresswoman Hall
returned to serve her
beloved Gary, Indiana when she became the Vice Chair of
the Gary Housing Board of Commissioners;
Whereas, Congresswoman Hall
continued her dedicated
public service to her community when she served as Gary
City Clerk from 1985 until 1993;
Whereas, Congresswoman Hall was called to her
heavenly home on February 20th, 2012, after a lifetime of
dedicated service that continues to provide inspiration to not
only African-Americans, but to all Hoosiers and fellow
Americans; and,
Whereas, Congresswoman Hall
's place in Indiana and
United States history will be written in indelible ink due to
her wealth of accomplishments never to be forgotten by those
who loved her or future generations who will benefit from
her great wisdom and leadership: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives honors the life and achievements of former United States Representative Katie Hall, commemorates her tremendous devotion to her constituents, her community, her state and her country, and extends to her family the sincere condolences of its members.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Congresswoman Hall's family.
