A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating the Martinsville High School Academic Decathlon team for winning its sixteenth consecutive large school academic decathlon state title.

RESOLUTION
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating the Martinsville
High School Academic Decathlon team for winning its sixteenth
consecutive large school academic decathlon state title.
Whereas, The people of Indiana take pride in the academic
and extracurricular accomplishments of the high school
students of their state;
Whereas, On February 8 and 9, 2013, Martinsville High
School competed in the state finals of the Academic
Decathlon contest held at Purdue University;
Whereas, The Martinsville High School Academic
Decathlon team won its sixteenth consecutive large school
academic decathlon state title, earning the team the right to
advance to the national competition to be held in
Minneapolis, Minnesota;
Whereas, The Martinsville team won the state title with a
total of 38,745 points, nearly 2,000 points ahead of second
place Lowell;
Whereas, This victory marks the 30th state championship
for Martinsville High School in all academic competitions,
the most of any school in Indiana;
Whereas, The overall theme for the 2013 competition is Russia, and each team member must compete in math, science, music, art, economics, social studies, language and literature, speech, essay, and interview;
Whereas, Preparation for the competition is intense, with team members practicing hundreds of hours;
Whereas, Coach Wayne Babbitt expressed his great
appreciation to the community for the tremendous support
provided to the team, including teachers, parents, and
community members who donated their time so freely to help
the team prepare for this year's competition;
Whereas, Success in the academic decathlon requires
dedication and sacrifice to attain one's goals; each member
of the Martinsville High Schoool Academic Decathlon team
is an excellent role model for children and adults alike; and
Whereas, It is fitting that these fine young Hoosiers be
given additional recognition: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly congratulates the
Martinsville High School Academic Decathlon team for capturing the
sixteenth consecutive state championship for the large school division
in the Indiana Academic Decathlon state championship and wishes the
team continued success in all its future endeavors.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Steven Fish, Jamie
Hutchison, Austin Mayfield, Savannah Presley, Stephanie Schneck,
Isaac Stringer, and Emily Kerstiens, coach Wayne Babbitt, assistant
principals Jeff Racy, Martin Woody, and Fred Kutruff, principal Don
Alkire, and superintendent Ron Furniss.
