A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring the Junior League of
Indianapolis.
Whereas, The Junior League of Indianapolis (JLI), a
nonprofit women's organization, has been working diligently
for 90 years investing in the lives of children and their
families throughout the community in order to positively
affect Indianapolis and the surrounding areas;
Whereas, The JLI is an "organization of women committed
to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of
women, and improving the community through the effective
action and leadership of trained volunteers";
Whereas, The core values of the JLI, whose purpose is
solely educational and charitable, are voluntarism, training,
leadership, community, collaboration, diversity, integrity,
respect, and well-being;
Whereas, Part of an international organization
representing more than 155,000 women in 292 leagues in the
United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Mexico, the
Junior League of Indianapolis has completed many projects
that improved the lives of the people of the community during
its first 89 years;
Whereas, Among these projects were the creation of the Occupational Therapy Department at Riley Hospital, a partnership that lasted 26 years, providing the core volunteer leadership to the Conner Prairie Pioneer Settlement that
helped them establish an "alliance" of volunteers,
contributing to the construction of a therapeutic play room
at the Julian Center, and supporting the Indiana School for
the Blind and Visually Impaired and the Indiana School for
the Deaf by helping to plan and staff special events and
outings for the children;
Whereas, Looking toward the future, the JLI is focused on
reading and is working to provide support to organizations
dedicated to improving reading skills, particularly those
programs that affect pre-kindergarten to elementary aged
children;
Whereas, Some current initiatives and programs include
the Day Nursery Emerging Readers Discovery Club, Indy
Reads Family Literacy, Indy Reads Advance Reading in
Kids, and Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis;
Whereas, The Junior League of Indianapolis was founded
as an organization designed to train women to be effective
leaders and volunteers in their community, and it is this
training that sets the JLI apart from other service
organizations;
Whereas, Members of the JLI receive training in leadership
development, personal improvement, and individualized
training on topics of interest to the members;
Whereas, The city of Indianapolis has benefited greatly
from the efforts of the members of the Junior League of
Indianapolis: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly congratulates the
Junior League of Indianapolis on its 90th anniversary and thanks the
organization for its many contributions to Indianapolis and the
surrounding communities.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to the Board of
Directors of the Junior League of Indianapolis.
