HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION

        A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION celebrating the bicentennial of New Albany.

    Whereas, Founded by Joel, Abner, and Nathaniel Scribner in 1813, New Albany was described as an ideal place to live;

    Whereas, The Scribner brothers had chosen the land directly below the treacherous falls to attract business owners who were looking for an easy trade route to the South, had constructed wide roads, and set aside plots of land for specific community-minded developments;

    Whereas, Joel, Abner, and Nathaniel Scribner named the town New Albany in honor of the capital of their home state of New York;

    Whereas, Due to well-placed advertising, an outstanding city layout, and a nice location, New Albany grew rapidly and by 1850 was the largest city in Indiana;

    Whereas, Industries began to grow, especially ship building, and New Albany grew into one of the major ship building centers, partly because of the existing supply of wood;

    Whereas, In order to support the ship building industry, foundries, lumber yards, and other support businesses were established, and John B. Ford became the first successful manufacturer of plate glass in the United States when he opened Libbey Owens-Ford, America's best-known glass

manufacturing company;

    Whereas, By the 1860's, New Albany had become home to more than half of all Hoosiers who were worth $100,000 or more;

    Whereas, During the Civil War, New Albany served as an escape route for freedom-seeking slaves because of its active Underground Railroad;

    Whereas, Disaster struck New Albany in January 1937, when the Ohio River flooded the area, forcing the residents to rebuild their beloved city;

    Whereas, The homes and businesses were rebuilt, and a floodwall was built to prevent future destruction caused by the river overflowing its banks;

    Whereas, New Albany continued to grow and prosper through both World Wars and the cyclone of 1917 because of the hard work and dedication of its citizens;

    Whereas, Today, New Albany has a diverse industrial base and a vibrant restored downtown where the arts and education play a major role in the lives of those who call New Albany home; and

    Whereas, The residents of New Albany are proud of their heritage and work hard to preserve it for future Hoosiers: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly congratulates the residents of New Albany on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the city and wishes them many more years of prosperity.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Dave Barksdale, Floyd County historian.
