    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION to memorialize and honor Lieutenant Governor Robert L. Rock for his lifetime of dedicated service to the people of Indiana.

    Whereas, a remarkable chapter of public service in Indiana history was brought to an end on January 9, 2013, with the death of Lieutenant Governor Robert L. Rock;

    Whereas, Robert L. Rock was a true Hooiser son, born in Alexandria, raised in Anderson, earned his Bachelor's degree from Indiana University, and served his country in the United States Navy;

    Whereas, in 1954, at the age of 26, Robert L. Rock was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives where he served in the 1955, 1959, and 1961 legislative sessions and as minority leader in the 1963 legislative session;

    Whereas, those who served alongside Robert L. Rock in the Indiana General Assembly considered him a friend and distinguished colleague;

    Whereas, in 1964, Robert L. Rock accepted his party's nomination to serve as Roger D. Branigin's Lieutenant Governor, where he presided over the Indiana Senate in the 1965 and 1967 legislative sessions;



    Whereas, Robert L. Rock served with vision and originality as Lieutenant Governor wherein he emphasized tourism, business development, foreign trade, the development of many local airports throughout the state, and the establishment of an industrial revolving fund to aid Hoosier cities in attracting new industry;

    Whereas, Robert L. Rock gained his party's nomination for Governor in 1968;

    Whereas, Robert L. Rock was elected as mayor of the City of Anderson in 1971, served with respect and compassion until 1980, and presided over Anderson being named an “All American City”;

    Whereas, during his tenure as mayor of the City of Anderson, Robert L. Rock enabled the expansion and improvement of the city's park system, the provision of a pension program for city employees, the creation of the city's transit system, the development of an historic thoroughfare known as Historic W. 8th Street, and the establishment of the Anderson Housing Authority Commission to provide affordable housing for disadvantaged families which now services more than 2,000 families; and

    Whereas, there can be no doubt that Robert L. Rock worked tirelessly so future generations of Hoosiers would have a better life: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly wishes to express its deepest admiration and its appreciation for the lifetime of dedicated service Robert L. Rock gave to the people of Indiana.
    SECTION 2. That the legacy of service and commitment to his state will continue to serve as an inspiration to all Hoosiers.


    SECTION 3. The Principal Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Lieutenant Governor Rock's loving wife, Mary Jo, and to each of their four children.
